01

First, make sure you mean the same Classic

Retail is the modern, ongoing expansion game. Classic is a family of experiences: Classic Era preserves the original level-60 setting, while progression and other rulesets have their own content and changes. An invitation to “play Classic” therefore needs a follow-up: which version and ruleset? In this comparison, Classic Era is the closest baseline for the original-world experience. Check the current launcher options before making plans with friends.

02

Forever: the original world with new directions

Forever’s stated direction is a permanent level-60 world that continues to grow. It revisits original Azeroth with class changes and new content, emphasizing the journey. That makes it an option for someone attracted to familiar places but curious about new decisions. Treat this as a design promise being tested, rather than proof that every player will experience the same pace or community. Read our new-features guide for the systems involved.

03

Retail: modern adventures and seasonal challenges

Retail offers the ongoing expansion story alongside activities such as raids, Mythic+ dungeons and Delves. If structured challenges and learning the current expansion appeal to you, it deserves a look. Our advice is to investigate the activity you would actually play: a casual evening exploring and a demanding dungeon session can be very different experiences within the same game. Do not judge the whole version by the most competitive stream you happen to see.

04

Classic Era: returning to a recognizable foundation

Classic Era is worth considering when the original level-60 world is the main attraction. If your friends are already there, ask what their ordinary sessions involve and how you could join them. Other Classic branches may follow expansion progression or special rules, so advice written for one should not be applied automatically to another. Forever’s revised content also means that an Era guide should not be treated as an exact Forever instruction manual.

05

Compare your priorities, not somebody else’s ranking

Ask yourself what you want this week: familiar questing, discovery, a regular group, a new story or a particular kind of challenge. Then consider where your friends play and how much time you enjoy committing. No version guarantees a welcoming group, and no version prevents you from playing casually. Before investing heavily in a character, confirm that you and your friends can meet in the same version, faction and ruleset.

06

Choose a starting point, not a permanent identity

You are allowed to enjoy more than one version, or change your mind after a few evenings. If Forever sounds closest to what you want, try our returning-player primer or beginner character guide. Once you know which class you enjoy, the multiple-toon guide helps you decide whether to expand your roster.
