The leveling-first rule
Tailoring needs no gathering profession: humanoids supply cloth during normal play. Pair it with Enchanting if you want to turn surplus crafts into dust, but keep enough cloth for First Aid if that skill matters to your character. Bags and meaningful upgrades come before filler crafts.
Levels 1–20: Linen and early bags
Humanoid quests in Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore, The Barrens and Silverpine build a natural Linen supply, with Wool beginning in the later hubs. The Deadmines and Wailing Caverns add dungeon quests and concentrated drops. Craft bolts in batches and improve bag space early; fewer town returns protect leveling time.
Levels 20–35: Wool into Silk
Duskwood, Wetlands, Hillsbrad, Ashenvale and Stonetalon provide humanoid camps beside quests. Stockades, Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps and Razorfen Kraul are strong when their quests are ready. Make useful gear only when it beats an imminent quest reward, and reserve some cloth for bandages.
Levels 35–50: Silk into Mageweave
Stranglethorn, Arathi, Desolace, Badlands, Tanaris and the Hinterlands offer many humanoid quest targets. Scarlet Monastery is the standout cloth dungeon, followed by Razorfen Downs, Uldaman, Zul’Farrak and Maraudon. Repeating a dungeon can make sense while quests, experience and cloth all remain valuable, but stop once only the cloth matters.
Levels 50–60: Mageweave into Runecloth
Felwood, the Plaguelands, Burning Steppes, Winterspring and higher-level camps in Tanaris supply cloth during major quest chains. Blackrock Depths, Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme combine quests with dense humanoid and undead loot. Save rare cloth and cooldown materials until you know which final crafts suit your build.
Dungeon habit
Clear bags before entering and agree on loot normally; cloth is a shared drop, not automatically reserved for the Tailor. Convert cloth only after the run so the group is not waiting. Dungeon quest rewards may replace crafted armor, while extra cloth can become bags, bandages or disenchantable items.
Catch-up farms
Farm humanoids only where another objective overlaps: Defias in Westfall, quillboar and centaur routes in Kalimdor, Syndicate or troll camps in the midgame, and Plaguelands or Blackrock-area camps late. A short cloth session is useful; prolonged grey-mob farming sacrifices too much character experience.
