The leveling-first rule
Pair Alchemy with Herbalism when possible, but let quests choose the route. Gather nodes that are on the road, craft in batches when you return to town, and keep only a small working stock of healing, mana, utility and stat potions. A ten-minute herb loop is useful when your skill falls behind; an hour-long detour usually is not.
Levels 1–20: starter herbs on the quest road
Peacebloom, Silverleaf and Earthroot are abundant across every starting region. Alliance characters can continue through Westfall, Loch Modan and Darkshore; Horde characters can use The Barrens and Silverpine Forest. Add Mageroyal and Briarthorn as they become available. The Deadmines and Wailing Caverns are good first dungeon targets because their quest chains keep you in herb-rich regions.
Levels 20–35: build a practical potion shelf
Quest through Redridge, Duskwood, Wetlands, Hillsbrad, Stonetalon and Ashenvale while collecting Briarthorn, Bruiseweed, Wild Steelbloom and Kingsblood. Make healing and mana potions first, then craft whichever yellow recipes use the herbs already in your bags. Stockades, Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps and Razorfen Kraul fit naturally into these bands when you collect their quests before travelling.
Levels 35–50: follow Goldthorn and Khadgar’s Whisker
Stranglethorn Vale, Arathi Highlands, Badlands and Swamp of Sorrows offer strong quest density beside Goldthorn, Fadeleaf, Liferoot and Khadgar’s Whisker. Run Scarlet Monastery, Razorfen Downs, Uldaman and Zul’Farrak for their quests rather than repeating them only for experience. Use the herbs gathered between hubs to maintain combat potions and elixirs for those runs.
Levels 50–60: gather where endgame quests already send you
Felwood, the Western and Eastern Plaguelands, Un’Goro Crater and Winterspring place Sungrass, Gromsblood, Dreamfoil, Golden Sansam and Mountain Silversage near major quest circuits. Maraudon, Blackrock Depths, Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme are the dungeon-quest backbone. Save rare herbs for recipes you genuinely plan to use instead of forcing skill points through expensive crafts.
Dungeon habit
Before each dungeon, take every accessible quest, clear bag space and bring the potions the group is likely to consume. Dungeon time should advance character level, quest chains and your practical stock at once. Herbs inside instances are a bonus for the group, not a reason to slow every pull or compete over nodes.
Catch-up farms
If Herbalism or Alchemy trails your character level, use one short circuit: Barrens or Westfall for early herbs, Hillsbrad or Wetlands for mid-tier herbs, Stranglethorn or Arathi for Goldthorn-era materials, and Felwood or the Plaguelands for the final stretch. Stop once the next quest zone supplies materials you can use.
