01

The leveling-first rule

Carry a skinning knife, loot every eligible corpse and skin the beasts your quests already require. Skinning is the easiest gathering profession to keep aligned with character level because it needs no separate tracking route. If a creature is too difficult to skin, spend a short session in the previous zone rather than abandoning your quest plan.

02

Levels 1–20: skin the starter wildlife

All starting regions work. Westfall, Loch Modan and Darkshore are reliable Alliance routes; The Barrens and Silverpine are reliable Horde routes. Wildlife quests provide dense clusters without purposeless grinding. Wailing Caverns is a good early dungeon overlap, while the Deadmines remains worthwhile for quests even if it provides fewer skins.

03

Levels 20–35: follow beast-heavy hubs

Redridge, Duskwood, Wetlands, Hillsbrad, Ashenvale and Stonetalon keep skinnable targets close to ordinary objectives. Razorfen Kraul offers useful dungeon overlap. If your skill lags, finish the surrounding wildlife quests before starting a separate farm.

04

Levels 35–50: Stranglethorn and alternatives

Stranglethorn Vale is the classic leveling-first choice because many quest chains target beasts. Desolace, Feralas, Tanaris and the Hinterlands provide alternatives and higher hides as you progress. Razorfen Downs, Uldaman, Zul’Farrak and Maraudon advance dungeon quests; skin only what the group naturally kills.

05

Levels 50–60: high-level beasts on major quest circuits

Un’Goro Crater and Winterspring are excellent because dense beast quests and high-level leather overlap. Felwood, Burning Steppes and the Plaguelands add variety. Blackrock Depths, Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme are valuable for quests and gear even when they are not the fastest pure skinning locations.

06

Dungeon habit

A corpse must be fully looted before it can be skinned. Stay close enough to avoid delaying pulls, and agree on rotation when another Skinner joins. Do not pressure the group to clear optional packs solely for leather unless everyone wants the detour.

07

Catch-up farms

Use local beasts in Westfall or The Barrens, then Hillsbrad or Wetlands, then Stranglethorn or Desolace, then Feralas or the Hinterlands, and finally Un’Goro or Winterspring. Favor mobs that also serve an unfinished quest, useful drop or reputation objective.
