The leveling-first rule
Keep Find Minerals active and carry a mining pick. Veins cluster along ridges, cliffs and cave walls, so route the edge of a quest area instead of riding a separate continent-wide circuit. Smelting can bridge some skill gaps, and every stone or gem may matter to Blacksmithing or Engineering.
Levels 1–20: Copper into Tin
Copper appears throughout all starting zones. Continue into Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore, The Barrens, Redridge or Silverpine for Copper and Tin. Mines and kobold-style caves are efficient only when a quest already sends you inside. Run the Deadmines or Wailing Caverns with full quest sets, then mine nearby terrain rather than delaying the party inside.
Levels 20–35: Tin and Iron
Wetlands, Duskwood, Hillsbrad, Ashenvale, Stonetalon and Thousand Needles fit ordinary leveling and contain useful metal. Arathi Highlands becomes a strong Iron destination. Stockades, Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps and Razorfen Kraul break up the route and supply quest rewards while your outdoor travel provides most of the ore.
Levels 35–50: Iron into Mithril
Arathi, Badlands, Stranglethorn, Desolace and the Hinterlands are reliable mixed quest-and-mining zones. Trace mountains and caves as objectives allow. Scarlet Monastery, Uldaman, Razorfen Downs, Zul’Farrak and Maraudon provide dungeon quests; Uldaman’s surrounding Badlands route is particularly convenient for combining ore and group progression.
Levels 50–60: Mithril into Thorium
Searing Gorge, Burning Steppes, Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Winterspring and the Plaguelands place higher veins beside endgame quest chains. Blackrock Depths matters for both long quest lines and Dark Iron progression, while Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme round out the dungeon route. Treat rare Rich Thorium veins as bonuses rather than mandatory stops.
Dungeon habit
Discuss ore nodes before the first pull and rotate fairly when several Miners are present. Never split from the group or trigger extra packs for a vein. A successful quest run with a few nodes is better than a slow, tense run that technically extracts more ore.
Catch-up farms
Choose the shortest band you need: starting regions for Copper, Loch Modan or The Barrens for Tin, Arathi or Thousand Needles for Iron, Badlands or the Hinterlands for Mithril, and Un’Goro, Winterspring or the Plaguelands for Thorium. Smelt, train and return to questing.
