01

The leveling-first rule

Pair Leatherworking with Skinning and favor quests that already ask you to kill beasts. Skin after looting, convert lower leather when it prevents waste, and craft useful armor kits or real upgrades before filler gear. Dungeon drops will often replace crafted armor, so check the next quest reward before spending rare hides.

02

Levels 1–20: Light Leather from ordinary wildlife

Every starting region supplies beasts. Westfall, Loch Modan and Darkshore work well for Alliance; The Barrens and Silverpine work well for Horde. Skin while completing local wildlife quests, then take quest sets into the Deadmines or Wailing Caverns. Wailing Caverns is especially comfortable for groups already fighting many skinnable creatures.

03

Levels 20–35: Medium Leather through mixed quest zones

Redridge, Duskwood, Wetlands, Hillsbrad, Ashenvale and Stonetalon place beasts close to hubs. Razorfen Kraul is a natural dungeon destination, while Blackfathom Deeps and Shadowfang Keep keep character progression moving even when fewer corpses are skinnable. Craft in town after several quests instead of interrupting every loop.

04

Levels 35–50: Heavy and Thick Leather

Stranglethorn Vale is the standout questing zone because its wildlife chains produce steady leather. Desolace, Feralas, the Hinterlands and Tanaris provide strong alternatives as your skill rises. Razorfen Downs, Uldaman, Zul’Farrak and Maraudon add quests and gear; Maraudon also suits groups looking for skinnable targets.

05

Levels 50–60: Thick and Rugged Leather

Un’Goro Crater, Felwood, Winterspring, Burning Steppes and the Plaguelands offer high-level beasts beside major quests. Blackrock Depths, Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme should be chosen for quest chains and upgrades, with skinning opportunities treated as extra value. Research specialization requirements before committing expensive hides.

06

Dungeon habit

Loot corpses promptly so they become skinnable, but stay with the tank and do not hold the group at every pack. If more than one Skinner is present, rotate or agree on a simple rule. The group’s dungeon quests and safe pace are worth more than squeezing every possible leather from the instance.

07

Catch-up farms

Use Barrens or Westfall wildlife for Light Leather, Hillsbrad or Wetlands for Medium, Stranglethorn or Desolace for Heavy, Feralas or the Hinterlands for Thick, and Un’Goro or Winterspring for Rugged. Choose a loop with active quests whenever possible and leave once the next zone can sustain the skill.
