The leveling-first rule
Fish when the location already serves another purpose: waiting for friends, using rested time, completing a Cooking need or stopping near the next quest hub. Train before your skill caps, carry a lure when useful and set a time limit. Fishing is excellent quiet play, but it should remain a deliberate choice rather than an invisible delay.
Levels 1–20: learn near the capital and first hubs
Start in safe water near your trainer, then fish briefly in Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore, The Barrens or Silverpine as quests move outward. Use the catch for Cooking where possible. If a Deadmines or Wailing Caverns group is forming, fish near the meeting route rather than making the party wait.
Levels 20–35: fish where the next quests begin
Wetlands, Hillsbrad, Ashenvale, Stonetalon and Thousand Needles offer convenient water near hubs and travel corridors. Blackfathom Deeps has a strong coastal setting, but the dungeon trip should be planned around its quests. Ten focused minutes while assembling a group is better than an unbounded session.
Levels 35–50: coasts and neutral travel hubs
Stranglethorn Vale, Desolace, Feralas and Tanaris combine questing with accessible coastlines or inland water. Zul’Farrak and Maraudon trips often pass through useful service hubs. Keep Cooking aligned when practical, but do not retain every fish if bag space is harming the main route.
Levels 50–60: high-level waters beside endgame plans
Azshara, the Plaguelands, Felwood, Winterspring and other high-level waters can support the final skill bands depending on live requirements. Use fishing as a calm session between Blackrock Depths, Dire Maul, Scholomance or Stratholme quest nights, not as a substitute for preparing those quests.
Dungeon habit
Fishing rarely belongs inside the group’s active dungeon time. Finish the profession stop before invites go out, arrive with repaired gear and open bags, and use your catch to support Cooking or group preparation. Respect everyone’s stated start and finish times.
Catch-up sessions
Pick water near an inn, flight path or the next quest turn-in and set a clear endpoint: one skill band, one stack for Cooking or the time it takes the group to assemble. If catches become difficult, use appropriate water, training and lures rather than forcing progress in an unsuitable zone.
