01

The leveling-first rule

Pair Engineering with Mining, keep stone and cloth as well as bars, and choose a few gadgets you will actually use. Bombs, target dummies, scopes and utility devices are more valuable when they solve a leveling problem; crafting every novelty immediately can consume the ore meant for later skill bands.

02

Levels 1–20: Copper, Rough Stone and Linen

Gather Copper in your starting region and Tin as quests move into Westfall, Loch Modan, The Barrens, Redridge and Silverpine. Humanoids provide Linen and Wool for early components. Take full quest sets into the Deadmines or Wailing Caverns and use the run to learn when a bomb or dummy genuinely improves safety.

03

Levels 20–35: Bronze, Iron and useful explosives

Wetlands, Duskwood, Hillsbrad, Ashenvale, Stonetalon and Thousand Needles keep ore close to quest circuits. Stockades, Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps and Razorfen Kraul give group practice and cloth. Build a modest supply of explosives; do not burn every cooldown just to justify the profession.

04

Levels 35–50: Mithril and specialization planning

Arathi, Badlands, Stranglethorn, Desolace and the Hinterlands cover Iron and Mithril while you quest. Scarlet Monastery, Uldaman, Razorfen Downs, Zul’Farrak and Maraudon are natural gadget test beds. Read the live Gnomish and Goblin Engineering requirements before committing, because specialist recipes and quests can differ from remembered Classic paths.

05

Levels 50–60: Thorium beside endgame quest chains

Searing Gorge, Burning Steppes, Un’Goro, Felwood, Winterspring and the Plaguelands place Thorium near valuable quests. Blackrock Depths, Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme reward preparation and situational utility. Keep rare gems and dense stone until you know which endgame devices you intend to make.

06

Dungeon habit

Tell the tank before using knockback, fear-like or large-area devices that could change a pull. Carry only a sensible field kit so bag pressure does not erase quest efficiency. Dungeon quests remain the reason for the trip; Engineering should make the run safer or more interesting, not slower.

07

Catch-up farms

Use Loch Modan or The Barrens for early metal, Arathi or Thousand Needles for Iron, Badlands or the Hinterlands for Mithril, and Un’Goro or Winterspring for Thorium. Mine a short circuit, craft the missing band at the nearest suitable town, then return to your character route.
