The leveling-first rule
Cook what your current route naturally drops. Keep one stack of useful food, learn recipes when travel already takes you near the vendor or quest, and sell or store ingredients that belong to a later band. Fishing can fill gaps, but Cooking should not force long stationary sessions unless you enjoy them.
Levels 1–20: starter meat and fish
Boar, wolf, bear and other wildlife quests across every starting region provide early meat. Westfall, Loch Modan, Darkshore, The Barrens and Silverpine keep those drops flowing. Pick up Cooking quests and local recipes while visiting towns. Bring a modest food stack to the Deadmines or Wailing Caverns rather than returning to cook during the run.
Levels 20–35: follow the wildlife quests
Duskwood, Wetlands, Hillsbrad, Ashenvale, Stonetalon and Thousand Needles provide varied meat and nearby fishing water. Cook whatever recipe remains skill-efficient without sending you across the world for one ingredient. Stockades, Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps and Razorfen Kraul are good reasons to prepare food in advance.
Levels 35–50: Stranglethorn, Desolace and Tanaris
Stranglethorn Vale combines beast quests, coastlines and fishing; Desolace, Feralas, Tanaris and the Hinterlands provide alternatives. Scarlet Monastery, Uldaman, Razorfen Downs, Zul’Farrak and Maraudon supply quest nights where food reduces recovery downtime. Complete profession quest chains when they align with your travel plan.
Levels 50–60: cook for the content you actually run
Un’Goro, Felwood, Winterspring and the Plaguelands provide higher-level meat and fish near endgame quests. Prepare before Blackrock Depths, Dire Maul, Scholomance and Stratholme. Favor food with a clear use for your class or group instead of hoarding every possible recipe ingredient.
Dungeon habit
Cooking happens before or after the instance, not between pulls. Share food when it helps the group, but do not assume every player wants the same buff. Dungeon quests, travel and a successful clear should remain the main source of progress.
Catch-up farms
Use a beast quest you skipped, a shoreline beside your next hub or a ten-minute fishing stop near an inn. Select one recipe for the missing band, gather only its ingredients, cook to the next useful threshold and resume questing.
